The moment the Shinkansen stops at Shin-Aomori Station and you step outside, the air feels different.
There's a crispness you'll never find in Tokyo or Osaka — a cold breeze laced with the scent of apples. This is Aomori (青森), the very tip of mainland Japan. It's one of Japan's best-kept treasures, still virtually unknown to most travelers.
Why You Should Visit Aomori
In summer, massive Nebuta lantern floats parade through the streets in one of Japan's grandest festivals. In autumn, the foliage along Oirase Gorge turns into something out of an ink-wash painting. World-class contemporary art, the literary legacy of Dazai Osamu, and Japan's finest apples — once you visit Aomori, you'll find yourself planning your return.
Nebuta Warasse — The Festival, 365 Days a Year
Just a one-minute walk from Aomori Station. Towering Nebuta floats — 5 meters tall, 9 meters wide — glow brilliantly under the lights.
The Aomori Nebuta Festival runs every year from August 2nd to 7th and draws 3 million visitors. Even if you can't make it for the actual festival, standing before the real Nebuta floats at Warasse (ワ・ラッセ) lets you feel that overwhelming energy firsthand.
Right next door, A-FACTORY serves Aomori apple cider. You can also sample apple brandy.
Nokkedon — Build Your Own Seafood Bowl
A five-minute walk from Aomori Station is the Aomori Gyosai Center (fish market). Buy a set of meal tickets (10 tickets for 1,500 yen, ~$10) and wander through 30-some stalls, picking whatever seafood catches your eye.
Fatty tuna belly, salmon ikura, scallops, sweet shrimp — pile all your favorites onto a bowl of rice and you've got the happiest seafood bowl in the world.
The market opens at 7 AM. Get there early for the freshest picks and smaller crowds.
Oirase Gorge — Japan's Most Beautiful Walk
A 14-kilometer stream flowing down from Lake Towada (十和田湖). Fourteen waterfalls, large and small, cascade between moss-covered boulders.
In mid-October, when the autumn foliage peaks, Oirase (奥入瀬) looks like a living ink-wash painting. Stand before Kumoi Falls (雲井の滝) and all you hear is rushing water and wind — you can feel every bit of city stress washing away.
Park at the Ishigedo rest stop and explore on foot — it's the most convenient approach. The walking trail along the stream is well-maintained and suitable for anyone.
Towada Art Center — A World-Class Museum in a Small Town
A giant flower by Yayoi Kusama, a boy sculpture by Ron Mueck, a house by Do Ho Suh. Works by internationally renowned contemporary artists fill the building inside and out.
A museum like this in a town of just 60,000 people — even if you're not into art, you'll be impressed. And if you are, you'll be moved.
The outdoor sculptures are free to view. Visit on the same day as Oirase for an efficient itinerary.
Hirosaki (弘前) — The Apple Kingdom
Aomori is Japan's #1 apple-producing prefecture, and Hirosaki Apple Park sits at the heart of it all.
Stroll through 1,300 apple trees of 65 different varieties. During harvest season (August–November), you can pick apples right off the tree. The orchard landscape with Mount Iwaki (岩木山) in the background is picture-perfect.
Hirosaki Castle's cherry blossoms (late April–early May) are among Japan's finest. A city worth visiting twice — once for apples, once for cherry blossoms.
Mount Hakkoda (八甲田山) — A Mountain for All Seasons
A 10-minute ropeway ride brings you to the summit at 1,324 meters. In winter, "snow monsters" (juhyo ice trees) appear; in autumn, 360-degree fall colors unfold around you.
On clear days, they say you can see all the way to Hokkaido — though honestly, it's a foggy mountain, so catching a clear day is a stroke of luck.
The snow monster season (January–March) is the most popular. Below the mountain, Yachi Onsen's "Sennin-buro" is famous as a mixed-gender outdoor bath.
