Thirty minutes by train from Osaka. Step off the bus at Arima and every alley smells like hot springs.
Alongside Kusatsu and Gero, Arima Onsen (有馬温泉) is counted among Japan's three most famous hot springs. The first time our CEO visited, she said, "I can't believe a place like this exists right next to Osaka."
Arima Onsen — Gold and Silver Springs
What makes Arima truly special is that two completely different types of hot springs exist in a single village.
Kinsen (Gold Spring) — Rich in iron oxide, the water has a reddish tint and is a strong salt spring. It's briny and deeply warming. Ginsen (Silver Spring) — Crystal-clear carbonic acid and radon springs. Gentle on the skin with a refreshing feel.
In one visit, you can experience two entirely different types of hot springs. It's a combination you'd be hard-pressed to find anywhere else.
Gekkoen Yugetsusanso — The Ryokan Our CEO Fell For
The place our CEO called "a perfect kaiseki dinner." An open-air bath overlooking the valley with Arima's mountain scenery, a kaiseki dinner featuring Kobe beef and seasonal seafood — it runs over 30,000 yen (~$200) per night, but it's worth every yen.
The breakfast is especially memorable — the tofu and vegetable dishes are exquisite. A light, clean morning meal after an onsen soak — that's the true magic of an Arima ryokan.
Kobe Beef Steak — Melt-in-Your-Mouth Wonder
For lunch, head to the Kitano hillside area in Kobe's Sannomiya district for Kobe beef. Watching a teppanyaki chef grill Kobe beef right before your eyes — the buttery aroma and rich juices are unforgettable.
"It melts in your mouth" is not an exaggeration. The marbling in Kobe beef is so fine that the fat begins to dissolve at body temperature. Lunch courses (8,000–12,000 yen, ~$54–80) are about half the price of dinner, so going at midday is the smart move.
